Scenario based contingency planning to prepare for the upcoming South- West Monsoon 2018

The National Disaster Relief Services Center (NDRSC) has been started a scenario based contingency planning process to prepare for the upcoming South-West Monsoon conditions in 2018. The planning process has been technically supported by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and World Food Programme (WFP).

The Center expects that consequences of the upcoming monsoon rains may impact several Districts belonging to western. Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Galle, Matara, Hambatota, Kegalle and Ratnapura Districts. The NDRSC has circulated a guideline to develop contingency plans for divisional secretariat divisions with the analysis of historical data and current demographic parameters to foresee the potential impacts. The given figures in the system are manipulated based said methodology to plan ahead and provide beforehand information to donor agencies to register to implement coordinated relief distribution during the actual emergency.

The actual scenario might be differ from the given details based on the intensity and geo-coverage of the disaster situation, however the NDRSC believes, this could be a better tool for prepare for the impending situation to avoid unnecessary confusion & duplication and improve the coordination. This is a pilot initiative by the Center and will improve and promote to all are planning to join hands with the Ministry of Disaster Management for this humanitarian efforts.
